چکیده

Abstract Background and Objectives Knee osteoarthritis is one of the primary causes chronic pain among older adults because aging population, number total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) performed exponentially increasing. While reduction a goal TKA, movement-evoked rarely assessed pre- post-TKA. We characterized distributions change in pain, function, situational catastrophizing patients from pre-surgery to 3 months post-surgery explored associations these pre-post changes. Research Design Methods This prospective study longitudinally with (N=92) using in-person performance-based tests (6-minute walk test [6MWT], stair-climb [SCT]) prior 3-months after TKA. Patients also completed Western Ontario McMaster Universities Scales (WOMAC) function subscales, Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), 3- 6-months post-surgery. Results Movement-evoked on performance significantly improved Improved SCT was associated reduced catastrophizing. Similarly, during SCT. However, 6MWT not or catastrophizing; yet 6MWT. Reduced both consistently WOMAC whereas inconsistently pain. Notably, greater at post-TKA worse 6 months, better but related months. Discussion Implications Findings highlight importance situation-specific in-vivo assessments physical activity.

Associations among pain catastrophizing, muscle strength, and physical performance after total knee and hip arthroplasty

AIM To investigate whether reductions in pain catastrophizing associated with physical performance in the early period after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS The study group of 46 participants underwent TKA or THA. The participants were evaluated within 7 d before the operation and at 14 d afterwards. Physical performance was measured by the Timed Up and ...

Association between socioeconomic status and pain, function and pain catastrophizing at presentation for total knee arthroplasty

BACKGROUND Patients with higher socioeconomic status (SES) are shown to have better total knee arthroplasty (TKA) outcomes compared to those with lower SES. The relationship between SES and factors that influence TKA use is understudied. We examined the association between SES and pain, function and pain catastrophizing at presentation for TKA. METHODS In patients undergoing TKA at an academi...

Increasing comorbidity is associated with worsening physical function and pain after primary total knee arthroplasty

BACKGROUND Previous studies suggested that pre-operative comorbidity was a risk factor for worse outcomes after TKA. To our knowledge, studies have not examined whether postoperative changes in comorbidity impact pain and function outcomes longitudinally. Our objective was to examine if increasing comorbidity postoperatively is associated with worsening physical function and pain after primary ...

Pain catastrophizing in youths with physical disabilities and chronic pain.

OBJECTIVE The current study examined the associations between catastrophizing and pain intensity, psychological adjustment, functional ability, and community participation in youths with physical disability and chronic pain. METHODS Participants consisted of 80 youths, aged 8-20 years, with cerebral palsy (n = 34), neuromuscular disease (n = 22), or spina bifida (n = 24). Measures from a cros...

Catastrophizing during and after pregnancy: associations with lumbopelvic pain and postpartum physical ability.

BACKGROUND There is a lack of knowledge about the possible role of catastrophizing in lumbopelvic pain during and after pregnancy and in postpartum physical ability. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to explore how catastrophizing fluctuates over time during and after pregnancy and to investigate the associations between catastrophizing and lumbopelvic pain and between catastrophizing and...
